Inland tropical storm preparedness

You do not need to live on a coast to face tropical cyclone hazards. Remnants can bring heavy rain, flash flooding, tornadoes, and power outages well inland. Follow your local forecast, not just a storm's coastal track.

Prepare for the hazards at your address

  • Check your local NWS forecast and turn on Wireless Emergency Alerts. Know where to get county or city emergency updates.
  • Identify low-water crossings, creeks, underpasses, and flood-prone roads near your home and commute. Never drive through floodwater.
  • Choose a small interior room on the lowest floor for a tornado warning, away from windows. Keep sturdy shoes and a flashlight nearby.
  • Store water, medications, a weather radio, lighting, and phone charging for outages. Keep generators outside and away from doors and windows.
  • Plan a route and a contact method if local officials issue evacuation or shelter instructions.

Official local information
